Daring Rescuers Tackle Dolphin Calf Tangled in Fishing Line
Australian rescuers from the Sea World Foundation leapt from a boat and tackled a bottlenose dolphin calf entangled in a fishing line in order to free it, video shows.
Footage released by the marine conservation group shows the intervention off the coast of Forster, New South Wales, on Sunday, October 12.
After two men jump into the water to grab the juvenile dolphin, one rescuer holds it still while another uses a knife to slice through and remove the line. Large scars can be seen on the calf’s tail.
The Sea World Foundation was alerted to the dolphin’s struggle when locals noticed its limited mobility, according to a press release. Drone footage later identified fishing line entanglement as the cause.
“While the calf had some wounds from where the line cut into the tail stock, as well as a degree of scoliosis due to the restricted swimming ability caused by the entanglement, our team are optimistic the calf should recover from these injuries, and with the support of its mother, reintegrate back into the local pods,” Sea World Foundation Head Veterinarian Dr Claire Madden said.
“We encourage all water users to dispose of their rubbish and fishing gear responsibly,” Madden said
The foundation credited the Organization for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA) and the Forster Dive Centre for supporting the rescue operation.
