This Florida Family Just Saved a Turtle Tangled in a Fishing Net

A family snorkeling trip off Key West turned into an unexpected rescue after they spotted a green sea turtle tangled in a buoy line.

Kim Falconer, who was heading with her family to Sand Key, a sanctuary preservation area about 11 kilometers west of Key West, noticed the turtle struggling in the water. She quickly reached out to The Turtle Hospital, a local non-profit that rehabilitates injured sea turtles.

With guidance from hospital manager Bette Zirkelbach, Falconer and her family carefully worked to free the animal. Video captured by Falconer shows the tense moments as the family untangled the line wrapped around the turtle.

The green sea turtle is considered a threatened species in the region, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Conservationists warn that entanglements in fishing gear, nets, and debris remain one of the leading dangers to the species.

Thanks to the family’s quick action, the turtle swam away unharmed, leaving behind both relief and a reminder of the ongoing risks marine animals face in Florida’s waters.
