Meet the Charming New Orange Monkeys Making Waves at Chester Zoo
Chester Zoo has announced the arrival of two “super rare and super orange” new residents — a pair of golden lion tamarins.
The monkeys, named George and Leaf, are the first of their species to ever call Chester Zoo home. Their arrival marks a significant moment for the zoo, which has been involved in international efforts to protect and restore populations of this endangered primate.
Golden lion tamarins, with their striking flame-colored fur and small, expressive faces, were once on the very edge of extinction. By the early 1970s, only a few hundred remained in the wild. Since then, a combination of habitat protection, breeding programs, and reintroduction efforts has helped the species slowly recover, though they remain at risk.
Native to the lush coastal forests of Brazil, golden lion tamarins play an important role in their ecosystem, helping to disperse seeds and maintain healthy forests. However, deforestation and habitat loss continue to threaten their survival.
With George and Leaf now settling into their new surroundings, Chester Zoo says it hopes their presence will help raise awareness of the challenges these primates face — and inspire visitors to support conservation work that protects endangered species around the world.
