Meet Tambi: The Adorably Lanky Giraffe Making History at Melbourne Zoo

Melbourne Zoo revealed the very fitting name it gave the first giraffe cub to be born at the wildlife park in almost 20 years.

In a media release sent to Storyful, Melbourne Zoo announced the giraffe would be named Tambi - noodle in Swahili - in honour of his nickname.

“We had already affectionally nicknamed him Noodle because of his lanky long legs and neck which he really had to

learn how to use when he was first born,” Melbourne Zoo Carnivores and Ungulates keeper Georgie Greig said.

Footage filmed on Thursday, August 21, shows Tambi prancing about in his enclosure, doing very fast zoomies, snuggling up to his mother Nakuru, and as any newborn would - eating a lot.

“At three weeks old, Tambi already weighed a staggering 100 kilograms (220 pounds), having put on 25 kilograms (55 pounds) since his birth,” Melbourne Zoo wrote in a statement.

The newborn joined the popular giraffe herd in Melbourne Zoo which included his mother, Nakuru, his father, Klintun, and Iris.

Melbourne Zoo opened a vote for members to select the cub’s name, shortlisting two other options: Tamu - Swahili for sweet, and Enzi - Swahili for power.

Tambi won by popular vote, with 48 percent of members selecting the name.
