Heartwarming Rescue: Deputy and Wife Save Abandoned Baby Donkey in Desert Adventure

An abandoned baby donkey was rescued by a sheriff’s deputy and his wife in Needles, California, on Monday, August 25.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Colorado River Station/Needles Police released this footage showing Deputy Flores standing next to the young donkey.

In a Facebook post, the sheriff’s department wrote, “Deputy Flores went above and beyond to help save an abandoned baby donkey.”

The department explained that the baby donkey was spotted by a post office manager a few days earlier, but they were unable to make contact with anyone from the Bureau of Land Management for assistance at the time.

“Determined to help, Deputy Flores came across the baby donkey again yesterday. With the help of his wife, he gently carried her into the sheriff’s compound and began searching for a burro rescue,” the post continued.

Flores managed to contact Kathy Jenkins of Socks the Oatman Burro and Friends at Oatman Burros Sanctuary Big Red Barn who came and picked her up.

In a comment under the department’s Facebook post, Jenkins wrote, in part, that the actions of everyone involved “absolutely” saved the donkey’s life.

The donkey was named Churro and remained at the sanctuary.
