Child Leaps From Second Story of Burning House Into Officer's Arms

Dramatic bodycam footage captured the moment officers in Asbury Park, New Jersey, rescued an eight-year-old boy from a house fire on Monday, August 25.

The Asbury Park Police Department said officers were dispatched to a home on Prospect Avenue, where they arrived to find smoke and flames pouring from the residence and a young boy at a second-floor window.

Video shows the officers pleading with the child to jump to them, assuring him, “We got you, just jump!”

The boy then leaped from the window and was caught by Officer Dewitt Bacon, Officer John Walsh, and local resident Joseph Dunbar.

He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and further evaluation.

The Asbury Park Fire Department successfully extinguished the blaze, and the cause of the fire remained under investigation.

“All involved displayed courage and bravery,” said Asbury Park Police Director John B Hayes, “including the eight-year-old juvenile who jumped from the window.”
